The local SEO checklist every small business should work through

Fifteen concrete steps to help local customers actually find you — no jargon, no agency retainer required.

Start with your Google Business Profile

For most local businesses, the Google Business Profile drives more enquiries than the website itself. It's free and it's the single highest-return hour you can spend.

  • Claim and verify the profile if you haven't already.
  • Pick the most specific primary category available, then add secondary categories.
  • Add real photos of your work, your team and your premises — not stock images.
  • Fill in opening hours, service areas and a full service list.
  • Post an update at least monthly so the profile looks active.

Get your NAP consistent everywhere

NAP means Name, Address and Phone number. Search engines cross-reference these across the web to decide whether your business is real and where it operates. Inconsistencies dilute that signal.

Write your details once in a single agreed format, then make every listing match exactly — website footer, Google, Facebook, directories, invoices.

Build reviews deliberately

Reviews influence both rankings and whether someone clicks. The businesses that get reviews are simply the ones that ask, every time, at the right moment.

  • Send a short review link the day a job is completed.
  • Reply to every review, positive or negative, in a calm and professional tone.
  • Never buy reviews — it's detectable and it's a fast route to a suspended profile.

Fix the on-site basics

Your website should confirm what your profile claims.

  • Include your town or city in page titles where it reads naturally.
  • Create a genuine page per service and, if relevant, per location — not thin duplicates.
  • Add LocalBusiness structured data with your address, phone and hours.
  • Embed a map and put your full address in the footer.
  • Make sure the site loads fast on mobile — most local searches happen on a phone.

Then be patient

Local SEO compounds. Most businesses see meaningful movement in two to three months, not two to three days. Do the checklist properly once, keep reviews coming, and let it work.
